Russian Yevgenia Kanayeva claimed the lead after the second day of rhythmic qualification Friday in Beijing.

Kanayeva, second after two events Thursday, pulled ahead of teammate Olga Kapranova.

World champion Anna Bessonova (Ukraine), the bronze medalist in Athens, remained in third ahead of Belarus' Inna Zhukova.

Spain's Almudena Cid, 10th, grabbed the last spot to Saturday's final in her fourth consecutive Olympic appearance.

In the group competition, Belarus held onto its lead over the favored Russians. Russia, which had a disastrous performance with the five ribbons Thursday, pulled up two spots with the top score in the three hoops/two clubs exercise.

The Chinese group qualified a surprise third over Italy and Bulgaria.

Good for the Chinese group for putting together solid programs for their home crowd! They looked great, and deserved their high placement.
