Beginning Thursday, fans can vote online for U.S. Olympians Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson and Courtney Kupets for the 2009 ESPY Awards. Olympic all-around champion Liukin was nominated for the "Best Female Athlete," along with tennis star Serena Williams, Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin, and college basketball players Maya Moore and Candace Parker. Both Liukin and Johnson were nominated in the "Best Female U.S. Olympian" category, one of 37 categories at the 2009 ESPYs. Johnson also was nominated for "Best Breakthrough Performance" of 2008. 2004 Olympian Courtney Kupets is nominated for Best Female College Athlete after a record-setting senior year at the University of Georgia. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Liukin won five medals: the gold in the all-around; silvers with the team, on uneven bars and on balance beam; and the bronze on floor exercise. Liukin, who is continuing to train toward the 2012 Olympic Games, is tied with Shannon Miller for the most world championships medals won by an American gymnast (nine). In Beijing, Johnson won the gold medal on the balance beam, and silvers with the team, in the all-around and on floor exercise. Now in its 17th edition, ESPN's ESPY Awards honor the best athletes and performances of the previous year. Online and mobile voting runs through July 11. Actor Samuel L. Jackson will host the 2009 ESPY Awards on July 17 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. External Link: 2009 ESPY Awards Voting Comments (7)
