Australian star Dasha Joura will miss the rest of the 2009 season following surgery on the ankle she injured at the 2008 Olympic Games. ![]() Dasha Joura (Australia) Joura will undergo reconstructive surgery soon on the torn ligament which has sidelined her since the Olympics in August, the Australian Gymnastics Federation confirmed Monday. "It's been nine months now, and I had an MRI recently and it showed that the deltoid ligament is still completely ruptured," Joura said in a release from the federation. "Going back to the surgeon, he said that it would be best for me to have an ankle reconstruction to repair that ligament." The Russian-born Joura has won the past three Australian national titles, and finished fifth all-around at the 2006 World Championships. She has won seven World Cup medals, including the gold on floor exercise at the 2007 DTB Cup. Joura suffered a bad sprain landing a double layout on floor exercise during podium training at the Olympic Games in Beijing. She competed in the qualification despite the injury, but ruptured the ligament completely during the competition. She nevertheless competed on uneven bars in the team final, helping Australia finish a record-high sixth as a team. Following surgery, Joura will be in a protective boot for two months, and rehabilitation is expected to take a further four months at least. "I'm planning on going into the gym for rehab and slowly starting to build back up the hours," said Joura, who trains at the Western Australian Institute of Sport in Perth. Joura, who is currently studying toward a degree in sport science, will serve as team manager for Western Australia at the Australian Championships in July. Her younger sister, Natalia Joura, is a member of Australia's junior team. The complicated surgery and rehabilitation make it difficult to guarantee Joura will return, women's head coach Peggy Liddick said. "I wish I had a crystal ball," Liddick told IG Sunday. "I certainly hope she makes a recovery — she still loves gymnastics and wants to contribute. There will always be a place on the team for her when she is ready." Comments (2)

Surgeons It's good that we have reliable surgeons around to help us for serious cases.Surgeries are very serious conditions but after the operation, everything that was uncomfortable will be comfortable. |
