Gymnix Gears Up for Cup

Montreal's Gymnix Gymnastics Club will host a trio of international competitions this weekend, with varied lineups that include 13-year-old U.S. rising star Jordyn Wieber and 34-year-old Slovenian veteran Aljaz Pegan.

Gymnix, which holds an annual international invitational each spring, has expanded the competition to include a World Cup event. The first World Cup of the season features only nine women from four nations, but 39 men from 12 nations will contest the men's competition.

World Cup qualifying competition begins Friday, with finals held on Saturday and Sunday.

Canada is sending top athletes to the World Cup event, including Olympian Nathan Gafuik and Elite Canada champion Brittany Rogers. Rogers is hoping to bounce back after a disappointing ninth place at the recent Tyson American Cup.

"I didn't do as well as I had hoped at the American Cup, but things happen for a reason, and you need bad days to have good days," Rogers said. "There's always something you can learn. The Montreal World Cup should hopefully be a better meet for me, and also a great experience."

Wieber, the American Cup champion, will compete in the Gymnix Junior Cup. Competition begins Friday with a team and individual all-around competition, and concludes Saturday with the event finals.

The International Cup features an all-around competition on Thursday night and event finals on Saturday.

The competition unfortunately will not be televised in Canada, Gymnix coach Francine Bouffard told IG.
