Anna Pavlova (Russia)

Two-time Russian Olympian Anna Pavlova told IG she has grown comfortable performing her floor exercise routine to an updated arrangement of the theme from a classic film.

Pavlova finished 10th on floor exercise Friday in the DTB Cup qualifications in Stuttgart, missing the final. She qualified second on both vault and balance beam to Saturday's finals.

Pavlova said she chose musician Maksim's arrangement of the theme from the 1960 film "Exodus" when she visited a friend — and former rhythmic gymnast — at her university. Her friend had used the arrangement for her hoop routine, and recommended it to Pavlova.

"We had to rearrange the music in many ways," said Pavlova, who has qualified for vault and balance beam finals at this weekend's DTB Cup in Stuttgart. "We added pieces and took out pieces. It took us a half-year to put it together."

Performing her floor exercise routine to this stirring composition, Pavlova finished fifth at the 2008 European Championships in France, and eighth (with a fall) at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Pavlova's exquisite choreography not only showcases her grace, but her ability to adapt.

"It's kind of a new genre for me, because I used to use slow pieces," the 21-year-old Pavlova told IG. "This is different for me and the audience, as well."

In the team final in Beijing, Pavlova and teammate Lyudmila Grebenkova fell off the balance beam, and Pavlova stumbled badly on floor exercise, mistakes which effectively cost Russia the bronze medal.

Pavlova, who finished seventh all-around and qualified for three event finals in Beijing, said her role as team captain involves reassuring her younger, less experienced teammates.

"The first advice I give them is not to worry," Pavlova said. "They need to just train, do their job, and not think of it as a big event. If they treat the competition in a simple manner, the results will be better."
