Canadian Championships Pleasant Surprise for Black, Clay

The July/August issue of International Gymnast will include interviews with 2017 Canadian champions Ellie Black and Zachary Clay.

Victories for both gymnasts might have been a surprise.

"My main goal was to get back out on the competition floor, and use it as a building block in my recovery and getting back competing," said the 21-year-old Black, who is coached by David Kikuchi. "I missed the first part of the season due to injury, so it was only my second competition back since the summer. I was really happy with the competitions and it was great to be back out on the floor with the other girls on the team."

Clay, 22, has made an incredible comeback after tearing his right ACL and fracturing his right tibia on floor exercise at the 2015 Arthur Gander Memorial.

"For a while I wasn’t sure if I’d walk without a limp, much less compete again," said Clay, who is coached by Richard Ikeda. "Through a family member I was lined up with the top surgeon in British Columbia as well as a very phenomenal physiotherapist. Between the two of them I was able to fully recover."
