Swiss senior Giulia Steingruber and Russian junior Anastasia Ilyankova each took two titles in apparatus finals Sunday as the 2016 Women's European Gymnastics Championships concluded in Bern, Switzerland.

After a disappointing fourth place in Saturday's team final for the Swiss seniors, Steingruber powered ahead with gold medals on vault and floor exercise. Second to Maria Paseka in 2015, the Swiss senior regained her vault title from 2014 with a huge layout Rudi and double-twisting Yurchenko. Great Britain's Ellie Downie won the silver over Russian veteran Ksenia Afanasyeva, who both vaulted double-twisting Yurchenkos and layout Podkopayevas. (Unusually, the eight finalists in the vault final finished in the exact same order as in qualification.)

Great Britain's Becky Downie also regained her 2014 European title on uneven bars with 15.500, adding an impressive .5 in difficulty to bring her D-score to 6.9. The 2008 Olympian competed a Maloney, back uprise to piked Tkatchev; toe-on full to Stalder-piked Tkatchev to Pak; Maloney, back uprise to Hindorff and dismounted with a full-twisting double. Co-world champion Daria Spiridonova, fourth in qualification but the third-ranked Russian, replaced teammate Angelina Melnikova; Spiridonova hit her 6.7-D set for 15.466, taking only a slight hop on the dismount for the silver. Teammate Aliya Mustafina won the bronze with a clean routine, although she did not connect her Pak to Maloney-half as planned (15.100/6.3).

Mustafina won balance beam with a beautiful routine, improving her D-score to 6.3 for 15.100 (double turn; two sissones to side somi; switch-half; Onodi; front aerial, front aerial, ff; RO, stuck double tuck). France's Marine Boyer won the silver (RO, two-foot layout; switch leap, switch side; sissone, front aerial, sissone, wolf jump; full turn with leg horizontal to full turn; RO, double pike; 14.600/6.3). Cătălina Ponor, with the hopes of the entire senior Romanian team on her shoulders, won the bronze despite missing several connections and going overtime (switch ring; RO, two-foot layout; Onodi; ff, layout; switch leap; Omelianchik; RO stuck double pike; 14.266/5.9).

Steingruber grabbed her second gold on floor exercise with huge tumbling and leaps (tucked double-double; full-twisting double layout; tucked full-in), and enough style to really sell the routine (15.200/6.4). Ellie Downie won a second silver (14.566/6.1), while Ponor won a second bronze (double layout; two whips to piked full-in; triple twist; double pike; 14.466/6.0), her 12th European championship medal. Top qualifier Claudia Fragapane (Great Britain) hit her opening full-twisting double layout, wolf jump pass, but placed fourth after poor landings on her three other passes (piked Arabian double front; triple twist; double layout).

On Sunday afternoon, Ilyankova won uneven bars and balance beam, bringing Russia's haul to four golds in the junior competition after the team title and all-around title for Yelena Yeryomina. On bars, she scored 14.766 (6.2) to take the title (Shaposhnikova, back uprise, full pirouette to high Tkatchev; Hindorff to Pak; Maloney; stuck full-twisting double). Teammate Ulyana Perebinosova performed beautifully for the silver, also with a 6.2-D set (Stalder-Shaposhnikova, back uprise, Stalder-blind to Yezhova; Maloney to Pak; Maloney-half; toe-full to Tkatchev; high full-twisting double). France's Lorette Charpy won the bronze.

Ilyankova, who had a disastrous 11.700 on beam in Friday's all-around final, redeemed herself in the final with the winning routine (RO, two-foot layout; full turn with leg horizontal, side aerial; ff; front aerial; illusion; side somi; full turn with leg held; RO, double tuck). Great Britain's Alice Kinsella won the silver, mounting (facing away from the beam) with an interesting back dive to chest-stand.

Romania's Ioana Crișan, who had the top score on beam in the all-around final, had a nasty fall on her opening flip-flop series and elected not to finish the routine. Teammate Olivia Cîmpian injured her ankle on vault and scratched from the floor exercise final, where she had qualified in third place, and was replaced by Crișan (ninth in qualification).

On vault, Martina Maggio (Yurchenko double full and full) and Martina Basile (Yurchenko 1 1/2 and full) went 1-2 for Italy. Romania's Denisa Golgotă tied Basile for the silver on vault and won gold on floor exercise (piked and tucked full-ins; double pike, double tuck) to salvage the competition for the Romanians. Kinsella took another silver on floor.

Russia won two more bronze medals from Yeryomina on balance beam (ff ff layout; full turns with leg held and with leg horizontal; punch front; 2 1/2 twist) and Perebinosova on floor exercise (tucked full-in; two whips to double tuck; 1 1/2 to double twist; double pike).

Russia topped the overall medal standings in Bern with 12 medals (six gold, two silver, four bronze). Great Britain won seven medals (one gold, six silver). Romania won five medals (one gold, one silver, three bronze). Switzerland (two golds, one silver), France (one silver, two bronze) and Italy (one gold, one silver, one bronze) won three medals each.

The next European championships, for senior all-around and events, will take place in April 2017 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Romania has not played host to Europeans since 1957, when the very first women's European championships were held in Bucharest.
