Russian star Aliya Mustafina will not compete at the upcoming world championships in Glasgow because of a back injury, she told media on Friday.

Mustafina won the all-around at the first European Games this past summer, but elected not to compete at this week's Russian Cup in Penza. She confirmed the back injury will prevent her from competing at the world championships that take place October 23 to November 1.

"Yes, I'll miss the world championships," she said. "The main reason for this is that I have a very sore back. I can't say it's a serious injury, but the pain has bothered me for quite some time. When I don't train, it gets better, and when resuming training again the pain comes back."

Mustafina, who turns 21 on September 30, also declined to comment on retirement rumors.

"As for my future plans, I never know in advance, so I don't want to say anything on this subject," Mustafina said. "Today I feel one way, but tomorrow might turn out differently."
