Hometown hero Tomas Gonzalez captured the gold medal on floor exercise as the 10th South American Games continued Monday in Santiago, Chile, where the medals were spread among gymnasts from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.

Held every four years, this year's continental championships includes athletes from 14 nations: — Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela — competing in 33 sports. (Venezuela reportedly was ruled ineligible to compete in the gymnastics competition because it did not take part in the 2013 Pan American Gymnastics Championships in December, also held in Santiago.)

Gonzalez, who carried the Chilean flag at the Games opening ceremonies, was near perfect in his exercise (1 1/2 to double front to stag jump mount; whip to triple twist dismount; click here to watch). His stuck dismount caused the audience to erupt into cheers for Gonzalez, who was a finalist on floor exercise and vault at the 2012 Olympic Games.

"The public makes us nervous, but also gives us confidence," Gonzalez said. "I'm happy for the gold meda, and tomorrow I'll go for the vault final."

Just fifth in qualification, Juan Pablo Gonzalez gave Chile a 1-2 finish by winning silver over all-around champion Jossimar Calvo (Colombia).

"The amount of people for me was an act of motivation," Juan Pablo Gonzalez said. "I'm satisfied, very happy. The medal was what we had come for."

Jhonny Muñoz, a member of Colombian's gold medal men's team, won the pommel horse title by nearly a full point over Brazilians Pericles Silva and Francisco Barretto.

On the women's side, Brazilian veteran Jade Barbosa took her third gold medal of the competition with the vault title. Barbosa, who is returning from a foot injury, won the all-around title and led Brazil to victory on Saturday. Teammate Isabelle Cruz took second over Chile's Makarena Pinto.

Colombia grabbed the gold and bronze on uneven bars, with gold going to Bibiana Velez, who topped Barbosa and Yurany Avendaño.

Competition concludes Tuesday with the final day of apparatus finals.
