Brazilians Blitz WOGA Classic All-Around
(5 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

The Brazilian gymnasts swept both all-around titles at the 2014 WOGA Classic, held Saturday in Frisco, Texas. The host club won the team title over Brazil and China. Brazilian Leticia Costa won the senior all-around as well as floor exercise (Arabian double front). Xie Yufen, a first-year senior from China, had a traditional Chinese uneven bars routine with elgrip pirouettes, to take silver medals on bars and in the all-around.

Japan was represented by a team from Nippon Sports Science University, including two-time national vault champion Mizuho Nagai, who won her specialty event, 2010 World Championship team reserve Akiho Sato, who was third all-around. Haruhi Uchimura, the younger sister of gymnastics king Kohei Uchimura, served as team captain.

WOGA's Madison Kocian, who suffered a sprained ankle at last year's U.S. championships, competed two events only. She won gold on bars (piked stalder-Shaposhinikova to Pak; Shaposhnikova-half; Jaeger) and beam (standing Arabian) to grab a gold and silver medal, respectively.

First-year senior Alyssa Baumann of WOGA also competed on only three events but medaled on each of them: gold on beam (standing Arabian also), silver on vault and bronze on bars.

2016 Olympic hopeful Rebeca Andrade outscored the field, bagging gold medals in the junior all-around, vault and uneven bars, as well as three silvers in the team, beam and floor exercise in the junior division. The powerful 14-year-old Brazilian threw not only a powerful vault (double twisting Yurchenko) and floor routines (double layout, 2 1/2 twist to front layout), but was also solid on uneven bars (Jaeger; Tkachev) and beam.

Another powerful junior was all-around runner-up Amy Tinkler (Great Britain), who tumbled a double layout and a full-twisting double tuck on floor to win the event. WOGA's Nadia Cho, who caught a layout Jaeger on uneven bars, won the all-around bronze.

The beam gold went to tiny Brazilian Flávia Saraiva.
