Two-time Russian Olympian Ksenia Afanasyeva won't be at the upcoming world championships to defend her world title on floor exercise, following recent ankle surgery.

"Unfortunately, Ksenia Afanasyeva will not take part at the world championships, where she certainly would have fought for the gold medal on floor exercise," said Russian coach Valentina Rodionenko. "Ksenia had surgery on her ankle a week ago."

Although the surgery was reportedly minor, Afanasyeva's coaches decided not to push her to come back soon. The 2013 World Championships, which take place Sept. 30-Oct. 6 in Antwerp, are for individual all-around and apparatus only.

"Since the world championships are for individuals only, we decided to sideline the athlete and give her a chance for a full recovery," Rodionenko said. "I think by December Ksenia will be come into shape. "

Afanasyeva, who turns 22 on Sept. 13, was a favorite for the title after gold-medal performances earlier this year at the European championships and University Games.

Aliya Mustafina, Tatiana Nabiyeva and Maria Paseka have been confirmed for the Russian women's team to Antwerp. The fourth spot will go to either Viktoria Komova or Anna Rodionova.

Mustafina and Nabiyeva are scheduled to compete in the all-around and Paseka will compete vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Either Komova or Rodionova will compete balance beam only.

"Now we're watching Viktoria," Rodionenko said. "She was sick recently, but has now resumed training with the national team. Within two weeks we'll know whether or not she will compete at the world championships."

What a huge disappointment!
Ksenia was the number one reason I was excited about this years World Championhips. Although I was disappointed in her last floor exercise routine she unveiled recently, I was excited to see her. She is by far the best current dancer and her floor routines always tell a story.
