Competition Begins at Anadia World Cup
(8 votes, average 4.75 out of 5)

The FIG's World Cup series returned Friday with the qualification competition at the Anadia World Challenge Cup in Portugal.

The competition carried a "B" status with the FIG but attracted an impressive field for both men and women. The women's lineup included Romania's Larisa Iordache and Diana Bulimar, and Russia's Anastasia Grishina, who won a combined eight medals at April's European championships. Six-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina was also one the roster, as was two-time Olympian Jessica Lopez (Venezuela) and first-year senior Shang Chunsong, who won two gold medals at last month's Chinese nationals.

The men's competition included Olympic champion Arthur Zanetti (Brazil), world champions Yan Mingyong Diego Hypolo (Brazil), two-time Olympic medalist Max Whitlock (Great Britain) and U.S. Olympian Sam Mikulak.

Chusovitina, who celebrated her 38th birthday on Wednesday, outvaulted Brazilian veteran Jade Barbosa to take the top spot in qualification.

Germany's Janine Berger, fourth on vault at the 2012 Olympic Games, returned after suffering a knee injury in March. She performed two watered-down vaults (Tsukahara full and piked barani) but grabbed the last spot to the final.

Lopez qualified first on uneven bars ahead of German duo Lisa-Katharina Hill and Kim Bui.

Shang, who was third on uneven bars, had the top spot on beam with a very clean exercise that brought the only score of 15.000 in the women's competition (jump to walkover mount; switch ring; ff ff two foot layout; front tuck, wolf, Korbut; double turn; switch leap, back tuck; front aerial to stag jump; side aerial, sissone, double pike).

Bulimar had the best score on floor exercise (double layout; 1 1/2 to double tuck; piked full-in; double pike). Belgium's Julie Croket returned from an ACL tear to finish second over Shang.

In the men's competition, Bulgarian-born Eddie Penev made his international debut for the U.S. after switching representation last year. Penev, who was a finalist on floor at the 2010 Worlds while representing his native country, topped men's floor exercise qualification in Anadia over Hypolito. Olympic finalist Tomas Gonzalez (Chile) finished third behind Hypolito and stuck his Tsukahara double pike en route to first on men's vault.

Whitlock (pommel horse) and Zanetti (still rings) each led their respective specialities. World and Olympic medalist Anton Fokin (Uzbekistan) led on parallel bars, while Pan American Games all-around champion Jossimar Calvo was first on high bar (Colombia)

Competition continues Saturday with the first day of apparatus finals. Live scoring is available through the official event website.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
