The competition is held in honor of Spanish legend Joaquim Blume, who won four gold medals (all-around, pommel horse, still rings and parallel bars) at the 1957 European Championships in Paris. A favorite for the 1960 Olympic Games, Blume was killed in a plane crash in 1959, along with his pregnant wife.

Following her Olympic disappointment, the 17-year-old Dementyeva scored 56.600 to comfortably take the women's title. Dementyeva earned the top scores on uneven bars (13.900), balance beam (14.750) and floor exercise (14.250).

Swiss Olympian Giulia Steingruber took second (54.650) over Spain's María Paula Vargas (53.700).

Six-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina (Germany), who is reconsidering retirementm, placed fourth. The 37-year-old mother posted the top score on vault (15.000) in Barcelona, where she competed in her first Olympic Games two decades ago.

Vernyayev, who won the Mexican Open in October, claimed another all-around victory on Saturday. Vernyayev, 19, scored an even 90.000 with the top scores on floor exercise, pommel horse and parallel bars.

British star Daniel Purvis placed second (88.734) with the best marks on men's vault. Fabian González gave Spain another bronze (85.299).

Spain's Nestor Abad, fourth all-around, had the top score on still rings. American Josh Dixon, fifth, outscored the field on high bar.

In addition to Chusovitina, 1992 Olympic all-around champion Vitaly Scherbo was in attendance and honored by the organizers. Scherbo — who won a historic six gold medals at the 1992 Games — was invited by the Catalan Gymnastics Federation to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his spectacular achievement.

"I have great memories of Barcelona," Scherbo said during a press conference.
