The 18th Asian Games will take place in Hanoi in 2019, the Olympic Council of Asia announced Thursday. The Vietnamese capital beat out Indonesia's Surabaya for the hosting rights for Asia's largest sporting event. The competition normally would have taken place in 2018, but in 2009 the OCA voted to permanently move the Asian Games to the year before the Summer Olympics.

The event will be the largest ever held in the Vietnamese capital, which previously played host to the 2003 Southeast Asian Games.

"We have trust in their leaders, the government of Vietnam, the city of Hanoi and the National Olympic Committee," OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said. "Vietnam has all the tools - a country with big potential and a booming economy."

The 2010 Asian Games were held in Guangzhou, China, while the 2014 Asian Games will take place in Incheon, South Korea. Gymnastics is one of the premier events at the Asian Games, which consists of mostly Olympic sports plus specialty events such as Sepak takraw and wushu.
