American Brenna Dowell and Ukraine's Oleg Vernyayev took the lead after the first day of the 2nd Mexican Gymnastics Open, held Friday in Acapulco.

Held at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess resort, the event features an all-around competition split into two days. The women competed vault and uneven bars on Friday while the men competed floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings.

Dowell topped Mexico's Yessenia Estrada and Australia's Georgia-Rose Brown. European all-around champion Anna Dementyeva (Russia) is in fourth at the halfway point.

Dowell soared past the women's field on vault with high and far double-twisting Yurchenko. Estrada competed a solid Yurchenko 1 1/2. Dementyeva, who has undergrown a growth spurt, barely made a piked-down Yurchenko full.

Dowell had the top mark on uneven bars as well, ending with a full-twisting double layout (6.0/14.55). Dementyeva was very clean with good difficulty until a weak double pike dismount (5.5/14.00).

Eleventh all-around at the Olympics in London, Vernyayev impressed with the top mark on each event Friday. Vernayev, who turned 19 on Sept. 29, outscored Russian Olympian David Belyavsky by nearly a point, 45.10-44.15.

Brazil's Sergio Sasaki (tucked Hypolito on floor) ranked third over British star Daniel Purvis, who watered down some of his routines (double twist dismount on floor exercise).

American Donnell Whittenburg ranked fifth with a few struggles but fought through for no missed routines.

The competition concludes Saturday.
