Seitz, Hambüchen Win German Nationals
(5 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

Absent from the European championships, Elisabeth Seitz and Fabian Hambüchen returned to competition to win the German championships on Saturday in Düsseldorf.

Elisabeth Seitz captured her third consecutive German title in Düsseldorf.

The competition also serves as the first of two Olympic trials. Germany qualified full men's and women's teams to this summer's Olympic Games.

Seitz won her third consecutive all-around title with a score of 58.75, a personal best. She had her top mark on uneven bars with 15.30 (6.7 Difficulty score).

"I'm very happy with the way it went today," said Seitz, who had skipped the European championships in May to rest an aching back. "I earned my highest difficulty scores on almost all the events and improved my personal best by 2 points."

Nadine Jarosch won the silver (56.15) with the top score on balance beam. 2008 Olympic alternate Kim Bui took third (54.80).

Oksana Chusovitina, headed to her sixth Olympics, had the top score on vault with 15.15. The five-time Olympian turns 37 on Tuesday.

Hambüchen also earned a comfortable victory. He defeated 2010 national champion Marcel Nguyen, 91.10-89.05.

Hambüchen's top score of the day came on high bar (16.35/7.5 D), where he was the 2007 world champion. After several injuries over the past few years, he had skipped Europeans to prepare for the Olympics.

"I'm very happy with my competition," he said. "I lost a few tenths on floor exercise because I didn't want to risk injury to my left foot, but other than that it went very well."

Two-time world all-around silver medalist Philipp Boy won the bronze after falling on high bar (88.20).

"I'm obviously very disappointed," said Boy, the defending champion.

Competition concludes Sunday with apparatus finals.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
