Levya Leads Orozco at U.S. Nationals
(1 vote, average 5.00 out of 5)

World parallel bars champion Danell Leyva narrowly edged top rival John Orozco on night one of the Visa (U.S.) Gymnastics Championships, which began Thursday in St. Louis, Mo.

Orozco held the lead after five of six events, but Leyva's 15.80 on parallel bars in the sixth rotation moved him into first by .05. Leyva, the defending all-around champion, also had the top score on high bar (Tak-full to Yamawaki; Liukin; layout Kovacs; Tak-half to layout Tkatchev; layout double-double with a hop.)

"It feels pretty good to be leading the Visa Championships," the Cuban-born Leyva said. "I'm using this meet as a stepping stone to get to the Olympic Games, so it's perfect."

Orozco took second over the University of Michigan's Sam Mikulak, whose 15.60 on parallel bars was the second-best score of the night (flyaway half between the bars to front uprise to straddle front 1 1/4; Tippelt; Stutz, double pike). Mikulak's 16.10 on vault for a triple-twisting Tsukahara was good enough only for a tie for seventh place on that event.

2010 world team member Chris Brooks was fourth, vaulting a rare Blanik (piked handspring double front) for 16.45, the top score of the night on that event.

Jonathan Horton — the only member of the 2008 Olympic bronze-medal winning team competing in St. Louis — placed fifth with the high score on still rings (15.500). Horton looked completely recovered from the foot surgery he had after the 2011 Worlds, scoring well on floor exercise (piked double front second pass) and vault (handspring double front).

Jake Dalton placed sixth ahead of Glenn Ishino, who had the top mark on pommel horse with 15.450. Steven Legendre, eighth, impressed on floor exercise with a packed set that earned 16.150 with 6.9 in difficulty (double-twisting front to double front; Hypolito; whip to tucked Thomas; 2 1/2 twist to layout front full; layout Arabian 1 3/4, piked Arabian double front).

The top five gymnasts all scored above 90 points in the tight competition. A point system will determine which gymnasts advance to the U.S. Olympic Trials, June 28-July 1 in San Jose, Calif.

In the junior competition, Baltimore's Donnell Whittenburg (Ultimate Gymnastics) leads the 16-18 year old age group, while Milwaukee's Marvin Kimble (Swiss Turners) was the top gymnast in the 14-15 group.

Competition continues Friday in St. Louis with the women taking the floor. The men's competition concludes Saturday.
