Vaculik Leads Canadian Nationals; Lee Injured

Veteran Kristina Vaculik grabbed the senior women's lead Tuesday as competition began at the Canadian gymnastics championships in Regina, Sask.

Vaculik scored 56.35, with the top scores on uneven bars and balance beam. First-year senior Victoria Moors was second (55.65) ahead of rising star Ellie Black (54.90).

"There's a lot of pressure right now and it's really good to see how everyone is doing," said Vaculik, coached by 1980 Olympic champion Yelena Davydova.

World team member Christine (Peng Peng) Lee was forced out of the competition after suffering a dislocated kneecap during Monday's training. Lee, who was injured landing a double-twisting Yurchenko vault, will undergo an MRI on Wednesday in Ontario.

"It's too early to speculate about whether Peng Peng can recover from this injury in time for the Olympics," said Jean-Paul Caron, president of Gymnastics Canada. "We are going to wait for the MRI results and hope for the best."

The Canadian women qualified a full team to this summer's Olympic Games. The team will be decided following the national championships and a second trials at the end of June in Quebec.

"After we qualified a full team for the Games it's been an amazing feeling," said Vaculik, who has taken the year off from Stanford University to train for the Olympics. "We've done our job as a country to send a full team and it's just great to be here knowing that we're going to send five girls to the Olympics."

The women's all-around final takes place Thursday.
