Uchimura, Tanaka Lead Japanese Olympic Teams

Kohei Uchimura and Rie Tanaka scored victories at the 51st NHK Cup, held Friday and Saturday in Tokyo.

The results — combined with the Japanese national championships in April — determined Japan's squads to this summer's Olympic Games in London.

Uchimura, the three-time world all-around champion and undisputed best gymnast on the planet, had already been named to the five-member Olympic team in December. Ryohei Kato, Kazuhito Tanaka, Yusuke Tanaka and Koji Yamamuro were named to the team on Saturday.

Uchimura is the only returning member from Japan's second-place squad at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he also won the all-around silver medal. A close second to China at the past two world championships, the Japanese men are hoping to reclaim the team title in London.

Rie Tanaka — sister of Kazuhito and Yusuke — will represent Japan in London along with Yuu Minobe, Yuko Shintake, Asuka Teramoto and Koko Tsurumi. Minobe, Shintake and Tsurumi were members of Japan's fifth-place team at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Undisputed best gymnast on the planet is right. The way he performed today, nobody could have touched. He was exquisite, beautiful perfection on everything, but his floor and high bar were particularly breathtaking.

Wonderful to see the three Tanaka siblings representing Japan at the Olympics. I talked to their father earlier and he is so proud; three very talented gymnasts, and if my meeting with Kazuhito is anything to go on, three very nice people as well.
