The Canadian women and Brazilian men dominated the competition Saturday at the 2nd Artistic Gymnastics Meeting, held in São Bernardo, Brazil.

In addition to a full contingent from the host nation, the competition featured female gymnasts from Canada and South Korea and male gymnasts from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, France, Portugal and Venezuela.

In the women's competition, Canada dealt a defeat to Brazil, 166.400-162.150. Canadian veteran Kristina Vaculik scored 55.500 to win a close all-around contest over teammate Brittany Rogers (55.500) and three-time Brazilian Olympian Daniele Hypolito (55.350).

"Of course we have to keep working hard and make the necessary adjustments in mid-year," said Brazilian coach Ricardo Pereira. "But I was very pleased with the girls' performance. They competed even better than we expected and this is very good, especially considering that the Canadians are at a very high level."

The Brazilian men scored 259.050 to take the team title over squads from France (253.850) and Portugal (245.700). Brazilians Pericles Silva (85.100) and Francisco Barreto (84.950) went 1-2 in the all-around, followed by Canada's Hugh Smith (84.450).

"I'm very happy, mainly because I did not expect this result," said Silva, 23. "I managed to overcome some problems. The goal is to increase my difficulty, since I'm already thinking about the 2016 Olympics [in Rio de Janeiro]."

Competition concludes Sunday with individual apparatus finals.
