Gomez, Lago Make Gymnastics History in Guadalajara
(8 votes, average 4.50 out of 5)

Guatemalan Ana Sofia Gomez and Mexican Ana Lago won historic gold medals Friday as the gymnastics competition concluded at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara.

Gomez, the all-around silver medalist, won the gold medal in the balance beam final. Gomez had a few wobbles (flip flop, tucked full; front aerial, back tuck), but stayed on the beam to take the title. She is the first gymnast from Guatemala to win a gold medal in Pan American Games history, dating back 60 years.

Lago tumbled a huge double layout en route to the floor exercise title, the first gold medal for a Mexican female gymnast at the Pan Am Games.

In the men's competition, Brazil's Diego Hypolito won vault, his third gold medal of the competition. Top qualifier Tomás González of Chile — second behind Hypolito on floor exercise Thursday — again took silver after crashing his Tsukahara double pike.

Mexican rising star Daniel Corral, the pommel horse champion, won his second gold medal of the Games on parallel bars.

American Paul Ruggeri, the first gymnast to perform on high bar, gave the U.S. its sixth gold medal of the meet. Coached by former high bar masters Justin Spring and Ivan Ivankov, the Illinois gymnast put away the competition by hitting all his releases and sticking his dismount cold.

This year's Pan American Games was the largest multi-sport event of 2011, bringing together more than 6,000 athletes from 42 countries competing in 36 sports. The 17th Pan American Games take place in Toronto in July 2015.
