Japan and world champion Kohei Uchimura held onto their first-day lead as the men's qualification concluded Monday at the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo.
Defending world and Olympic champion China competed in the final session Monday, but finished third in qualifying behind Japan and the United States. Germany, Russia, Korea, Romania and Ukraine rounded out the top eight teams, which advance to the team final in Tokyo and the 2012 Olympic Games.
France, Great Britain, Spain, Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Italy and Belarus advance to the pre-Olympic qualifying event, to take place in January in London, where four more teams will earn Olympic berths.
The Japanese ended with the top team totals on still rings and high bar. The U.S. had the best team score on floor exercise and China led parallel bars. Hungary, 21st, outscored the world on pommel horse.
The British team, host of the 2012 Olympics, finished a disappointing 10th. The team had a disastrous day on high bar, earning only the 20th best spot. 2009 world runner-up Daniel Keatings had falls on three events, failing to qualify to any finals.
Uchimura remained untouchable in the individual qualification and qualified to five of the six apparatus finals. The Japanese gymnasts earned nine spots in apparatus finals, followed by China with seven.
Competition continues Tuesday evening with the women's team final, followed by the men's final on Wednesday. In the team final, only three gymnasts compete each event, with all three scores counting.
