World and Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva jumped to an early lead Monday as the rhythmic world championships began in Montpellier, France

The Russian star scored 29.275 with the ball to lead the first day of qualification. Teammate Daria Kondakova scored 29.000 for her bluesy ball routine, while Azerbaijan's Aliya Garayeva had the third-best score, 28.175, with the hoop.

Russia leads the team competition with 83.525, followed by Belarus (82.525), Azerbaijan (79.125), Ukraine (79.100) and Bulgaria (77.300).

The individual competition features more than 100 gymnasts from 32 nations seeking qualification to the 2012 Olympic Games. The Russians, hosts of the 2010 Worlds in Moscow, are once again favored to dominate.

"Since the last championships in Moscow, the world competition has only intensified," head coach Irina Viner said. "Frankly, we had a scare at May's European championships in Minsk, when [Belarusian Lyuvbov] Charkashina won two events. There are many worthy individuals - Charkashyna, Ukrainian Alina Maximenko, Aliya Garayeva from Azerbaijan, Anna Alyabiyeva from Kazakhstan. Still, the main battle will unfold within our team."

The qualification competition continues Tuesday with the hoop and ball, with qualification with the clubs and ribbon scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Your are currently browsing this site with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6).

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
