English Teams Win Commonwealth Youth Games

England won both team titles as the gymnastics competition began Friday at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man.

Liverpool's Rebecca Tunney led England to first place over Wales, 159.75-156.00. Australia won the bronze (148.85).

On Saturday, Welsh sensation Angel Romaeo won the women's all-around title over New Zealand's Brittany Robertson and England's Abi Caig.

Romaeo, the 2010 British Espoirs champion, turned 14 on Aug. 14. She won the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise titles at the UK School Games, held Sept. 3-4 in Sheffield.

Birmingham's Dominick Cunningham, 16, led England to a comfortable victory over Canada, 238.70-229.15. Like their female counterparts, the Australian men won the bronze with 221.95.

In the all-around final, Cunningham and Gaius Thompson went 1-2 for England. Harry Owen won the bronze for Wales.

The 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games features athletes from 63 nations competing in athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby and swimming. The gymnastics competition is for females born from 1996-1998 and for males born 1993-1997.

Competition continues Sunday with the apparatus finals.
