World balance beam champion Ana Porgras captured her third consecutive all-around title Friday at the Romanian championships, taking place at the Nadia Comaneci Hall in Onesti. Porgras scored 58.650 to edge Amelia Racea (58.250) and Raluca Haidu (57.625). Porgras opted for a simple Yurchenko full on vault, but showed a beautiful new floor routine with a double layout mount. She earned her top mark on balance beam (15.825), with a wobble-free set (ff, ff, two-foot layout; front aerial, sheep jump; ff, ff, stuck double pike). Once again showing her trademark consistency, 2004 Olympic champion Catalina Ponor notched 15.775 (6.4) for a near-perfect beam routine (ro two-foot layout; double turn; Onodi, ff whip; switch leap, Kochetkova; front aerial, ff layout stepout; double pike). Ponor, who began training again with the national team in April, also had the third-best score on floor exercise (two whips to tucked full-in; triple twist; double pike). Olympic gold medalist Sandra Izbasa and world silver medalist Diana Chelaru skipped the competition to preserve their health for October's world championships. 2008 Olympians Imogen Cairns, Becky Downie and Hannah Whelan were among the 12 British gymnasts competing as guests in Onesti. The competition continues Friday evening with the men's team and all-around. World champion Marian Dragulescu is set to make his 2011 competitive debut.
