Komova, Garibov Golden Again at Russian Cup
(8 votes, average 4.50 out of 5)

Viktoria Komova and Emin Garibov grabbed more gold Sunday as the Russian Cup concluded in Yekaterinburg.

Komova, who won the uneven bars title Saturday, took a second gold on the balance beam. Still competing simpler sets to protect her ankle, Komova was near perfect (15.525) to take the gold medal over all-around champion Anna Dementyeva (15.150).

2008 Olympian Ksenia Afanasyeva won the gold medal on women's floor exercise to salvage her Russian Cup. Afanasyeva was the top qualifier from Wednesday's team competition, but fell to fourth in the all-around final after two falls on uneven bars. She showed off her new choreography and precise tumbling (double layout mount; two whips to triple twist) to take the title by more than half a point over Yulia Inshina. Dementyeva, who also debuted new choreography plus a full-in dismount this week, fell in the final for sixth.

First-year senior Yulia Belokobylskaya, third all-around and on uneven bars, won two more bronzes Sunday.

In the men's competition, newcomers again dislodged Russia's veterans from their comfortable spot at the top. Floor exercise champion Denis Ablyazin, 19, won a second gold on vault (15.762). Mikhail Bodnar took second (15.412) over Nikita Lezhankin (15.225). Olympic bronze medalist Anton Golotsutskov, the top qualifier, landed both his vaults on his knees for fifth.

All-around bronze medalist Nikita Ignatyev, 19, won the gold medal on parallel bars. All-around champion Garibov, 20, took a second title on high bar (15.700).

Team elder Maxim Devyatovsky, 27, managed only bronze medals on parallel bars and high bar in Yekaterinburg.

Russia will decide its world teams in September, using the results from this week's Russian Cup and competitions to come in Ghent and Penza.
