"It was important to get our first international in the run up to worlds out of the way," said Tim Jones, British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director. "And weere pleased and confident in what we saw that preparations are going in the right direction. From here we travel to the Romanian championships on Wednesday, which again will be a good opportunity to see the girls in an unfamiliar environment, and then we really begin the domestic preparations for Tokyo based at Lilleshall with a return match against Romania. Overall it's good to see we have a stock of 13 gymnasts to choose from a year out from 2012, and only six weeks from the world championships.”

2008 Olympian Hannah Whelan, who won her second British title in July, was the top individual (56.00). Whelan had her top mark on vault for a clean Yurchenko 1 1/2, but her lowest on floor after stumbling out of bounds on her 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 twist.

"I'm pleased with my performance today," Whelan said. "It could have gone better in places, but as my first competition back from the British, it's always good to come and out on top. I'm ready to really push on towards the worlds. It's now all about concentrating on getting my routines to the highest standard possible to help the team in Tokyo."

Vargas, the bronze medalist on vault at the 2010 Youth Olympics, took second all-around over Spanish Cup co-champion Beatriz Cuesta. Canadian Silvia Colussi-Pelaez made her international debut for Spain, finishing sixth.

Three-time world champion Beth Tweddle competed floor exercise only, garnering the high mark of the competition (14.75).

Competition concludes Sunday in Ipswich with individual apparatus finals.
