Belarus, Russia Split Rhythmic Europeans
(6 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

Belarus and Russia shared all the gold medals at the 2011 Rhythmic European Championships, which ended Sunday in Minsk.

World and Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva led Russia to the team title over Belarus and Ukraine, and picked up individual golds with the ribbon and hoop. Belarusian veteran Lyubov Charkashyna, 23, won individual golds with the ball and clubs.

Russia was the most successful with nine medals, but mistakes cost its gymnasts titles with the clubs and ball. Russia was shut out of the medals with clubs, after Kanayeva dropped the apparatus and teammate Daria Kondakova had two drops. In the ball final, Kanayeva and teammate Daria Dmitriyeva both had drops but still medaled.

"I made a serious mistake, and Lyuba Charkashyna was the strongest," Kanayeva told the "RIA" news agency. "She's performed very well over the years and she deserved this victory. I'm far from perfect, too — I make mistakes. You can win, win and win, and at the most inopportune time, lose. Apparently, what happened today was mean to happen."

Russian head coach Irina Viner attributed her gymnasts' errors to mental failures, but repeated her stance that "world and European championships are to be shared, and the Olympics are to be won."

"This time we shared, and with pleasure," she said. "Charkashyna has performed well. She is an adult female gymnast, already married. I am glad that she was able to pull herself together and perform. This suggests that gymnastics does not end at 19, 20, 21. The older gymnasts can show good results."

Israeli Olympian Neta Rivkin won the silver medal with the clubs and dedicated the medal to her father, Arkady, who died a year ago. The medal is Israel best finish to date in rhythmic gymnastics, earning public praise from politician Tzipi Livni.

"Your accomplishment is a source of pride for all Israeli sport, for our whole country," announced Livni, the first female opposition leader in the Israeli legislative branch. "I wish you will continue to win, and multiply those spiritual forces that encourage you to seek new challenges and make possible such a wonderful victory."

Silvia Miteva won the bronze medal for the ribbon, the only medal in Minsk for Bulgaria. Miteva is coached by her mother, Silvia Dicheva-Miteva. Miteva's father, Dimitar Mitev, is a Brevet judge and junior men's national coach in artistic gymnastics.

Belarus defeated Russia for the junior group overall title by .05. The groups performed two routines with five ropes to decide the overall title, with Russia winning the one-routine event final. Russia's group included Daria Svatkovskaya, daughter of world champion Oksana Skaldina and former athlete Dmitry Svatkovsky, an Olympic gold and silver medalist in modern pentathlon.
