Uchimura, Tsurumi Lead Japanese Nationals

Defending champions Kohei Uchumira and Koko Tsurumi took the first-day lead Saturday at the Japanese national championships in Tokyo.

Two-time world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura scored just shy of 95 points Saturday as the Japanese championships began in Tokyo.

Uchimura notched 94.900 to take a commanding lead in the all-around competition over Konami teammates Kenya Kobayashi (90.650) and Makoto Okiguchi (89.550).

The 22-year-old Uchimura earned his lowest score on still rings (15.200) and his highest on vault (16.600). On Sunday, Uchimura is seeking to clinch his fourth consecutive national title.

World medalist Kazuhito Tanaka was fourth (89.450), and his younger brother, Yusuke, finished eighth (88.100).

The results showed Japan's incredible depth, with 17 gymnasts scoring above 87 points. Youth Olympic Games champion Yuya Kamoto finished 34th (85.500).

In the women's competition, 2009 world all-around bronze medalist Koko Tsurumi leads Rie Tanaka by a full-point margin, 55.450-54.450. Tsurumi is searching for her sixth consecutive national title.

Tanaka, the sister of Kazuhito and Yusuke, finished ahead of Yuko Shintake (53.550).

Haruhi Uchimura, younger sister of Kohei, finished 16th.

The competition is the first step in qualification for the Japanese teams to this year's world championships and University Games. The world championships are scheduled for October in Tokyo, though the FIG will meet in May to decide if they should be moved because of the March 11 earthquake.
