Racea, Purvis Win Glasgow World Cup

A week after their all-around bronze medals at the European championships in Berlin, Romania's Amelia Racea and Great Britain's Daniel Purvis came out on top Saturday at the Glasgow World Cup.

The competition, the second stage of the FIG World Cup all-around series, was open to gymnasts based on their performances at the 2010 World Championships. The mostly European field included two gymnasts from the Americas and none from Asia.

European all-around bronze medalists Amelia Racea of Romania and Daniel Purvis of Great Britain won the Glasgow World Cup on Saturday.

Racea, the 2010 European champion on balance beam, topped Venezuelan Olympian Jessica Lopez to take the title in a weak women's field. Romanian Raluca Haidu won the bronze, despite falling off bars on her Jaeger and off beam on her full twist.

"I am very pleased with my performance here today and hope I can continue this success in this year's world championships," Racea said.

Purvis had a consistent day to edge Germany's Philipp Boy by one-tenth of a point.

"I'm really pleased," Purvisa said. "It was a bit of a shock to be honest, coming back from Euros I just wanted to have fun but I managed some clean routines and came first. It'll be straight back to training on Monday, I've still got quite a few competitions coming up so my aim is to just keep fit and at the same time continue to compete well."

Boy, who won the European crown in Berlin, sat down his handspring double front vault but managed to finish ahead of 2005 European champion Rafael Martinez (Spain).

"I'm not very happy with my performance as I had quite a few mistakes, but congratulations to Daniel on such a good performance," said Boy, the all-around runner-up at the 2010 Worlds. "With more competitions to come I’m looking to improve on my silver medal from last year's world championships."

American Jonathan Horton, who won the first stage of the FIG World Cup last month in Jacksonville, finished seventh. Horton had falls on floor exercise and high bar and struggled on parallel bars.

Britain's Daniel Keatings, the world and European all-around silver medalist in 2009, competed as a Wild Card entrant for the host nation. Keatings missed the 2010 World Championships after tearing his ACL last spring.

"I competed today but only as a wild card because you had to qualify from the world championships last year, which I missed through injury," he explained to IG. "But as it was in Britain we were allowed to do it as a wild card so my scores and rank didn't count, but if it had I would have been in fourth. I had a really bad pommels and floor wasn't so great, but everything else was good."

The FIG World Cup series continues next month in Moscow (apparatus) and in November in Germany (all-around).
