Tweddle Takes Third European Bars Title
(7 votes, average 3.00 out of 5)

British superstar Beth Tweddle won her third consecutive uneven bars title at the European championships, held Saturday in Berlin.

Tweddle held off Russia's Tatiana Nabiyeva, 15.100-15.075. Germany's Kim Bui took the bronze medal with 14.675.

New European all-around champion Anna Dementyeva (Russia) took fourth. Dementyeva was a replacement for teammate and top qualifier Aliya Mustafina, who suffered a torn ACL on vault Friday. Mustafina is expected to miss the rest of 2011 following surgery.

Olympic gold medalist Sandra Izbasa (Romania) won the gold medal on vault, putting an exclamation point on her comeback from a torn Achilles in 2009. Izbasa topped five-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina and Switzerland's Ariella Käslin.

In the men's competition, all-around silver medalist Flavius Koczi (Romania) won the gold medal on floor exercise, edging Israel's Alexander Shatilov, 15.500-15.400. Russian veteran Anton Golotsutskov won the bronze.

Hungary's Krisztian Berki reclaimed his title on pommel horse, topping France's Cyril Tommasone. Harutyum Merdinyan won the bronze medal, the first European medal for independent Armenia.

Russia's Konstantin Pluzhnikov and Alexander Balandin went 1-2 on still rings. Both gymnasts were left off Russia's world squad in 2010 to give experience to younger gymnasts. Eleftherios Petrounias (Greece) took third over world and European medalist Matteo Morandi (Italy).

Competition concludes Sunday in Berlin with the second day of apparatus finals.
