Despite errors, qualification leader Philipp Boy (Germany) hung on to win the all-around title Friday at the European championships in Berlin.

Boy swallowed errors on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar to claim a narrow victory over Romania's Flavius Koczi, 88.875-88.825. Boy successfully kept the continental crown in Germany, following Fabian Hambüchen's victory in 2009.

Koczi had the high scores of the day on floor exercise (15.250), pommel horse (14.575) and vault (16.100) to claim the Romanian men's first European all-around medal in six years. In 2005, Razvan Selariu took second all-around.

Great Britain's Daniel Purvis and Ukraine's Nikolai Kuksenkov both tied for the bronze medal with 88.350. Both gymnasts performed conservatively in places but avoided major errors.

Russian newcomer Nikita Ignatyev placed fifth with 87.650, .1 ahead of Germany's Marcel Nguyen. Nguyen, second to Boy in qualification, led the competition until coming off high bar on a risky half-Takemoto to Kovacs combination in the fourth rotation.

Russia's Maxim Devyatvosky, the 2007 European champion, fell off pommel horse and sat down his vault to place ninth.

Competition continues Friday evening in Berlin with the women's all-around final. World champion Aliya Mustafina is favored to win the gold.
