Moscow Bids to Take 2011 Worlds
(4 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

Moscow has offered to play host to the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships, in case the FIG decides to move the competition from Tokyo. The FIG announced this morning it would decide in May if the competition should take place in Japan, still dealing with the devastation of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The 2011 Figure Skating World Championships, previously scheduled for March in Nagano and moved to Tokyo, will instead take place in Moscow in April.

"If the world championship were held in Moscow it would be strategically important for our gymnasts," Olympic champion Svetlana Khorkina told "Soviet Sport" newspaper. "On the team are a lot of young athletes who will get confidence from competing at home. But they need to check themselves before the Olympic Games in London."
