FIG to Reevaluate 2011 Worlds Location

In light of the recent disasters that have affected Japan, The FIG announced in a March 31 news release that its Executive Committee would reevaluate Tokyo as host to the 2011 World Championships, which are scheduled for Oct. 7-16. Its decision on whether the competition should be held elsewhere will be discussed at the FIG Council in San Jose, Calif., May 18-20.

The news release stated:

"Today, the consequences of the nuclear catastrophe are still unknown, and there is a worldwide anxiety and concern. President Hidenori Futagi and the Japanese Federation have communicated their willingness to continue as planned the preparations and the running of these World Championships…. The FIG is sending its Directives and Appendices to all its affiliated federations, with the sincere hope that the World Championships can be held as foreseen without taking any risk for the health of the participants."
