Recovering from hand surgery, eight-time World Cup medalist Elsa Garcia of Mexico told IG she is eager to return to top form by the world championships in Tokyo in October, and perhaps sooner.
Mexico's Elsa Garcia waves at the 2010 Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, where the Pan American Games will take place in October.
"I can surely say that I am really excited about this year's world championships," said Garcia, who turned 21 on Feb. 8. "I hope to be in the best shape possible, and physically and mentally prepared to overcome whatever obstacles I might face along the way this year."
Garcia said she is gradually regaining use of her left hand, following December surgery to remove a synovial cyst.
"After surgery it was immobilized for a month with a splint," Garcia said. "I am almost ending my second month that is filled with mobility, rehab and strengthening my hand. So I think I will be recovered completely in April, or maybe May."
Garcia said she is hopeful that her doctor will soon clear her for complete use of her hand. She is currently limited to training on only balance beam, but without hand-support skills.
"I am constantly visualizing myself doing (all) the skills I do, and that makes me want to train more and more," Garcia said. "Next Thursday I will go to my doctor to see if he discharges me. If he does, I can slowly start using my hand when I train."
Despite her limited mobility, Garcia said she is confident that she will have full-content routines by worlds.
"I really hope I can do a double layout on floor as my first tumbling pass," she said. "On vault I would love to do a Yurchenko double twist, but that depends on how my hand responds. On bars, keeping it clean is key. On beam I am training a new combo, and am planning on doing a round-off, double pike dismount."
Garcia said her goals for worlds include individual and team success.
"I hope that we Mexicans show the world what we are capable of achieving," she told IG. "I think we can place in the top 18, and I look forward to making the all-around final and maybe the vault final. It would be great to be in the floor final. That is really my dream, but I have to work really hard."
