Johnson's Knee Still a Factor in Comeback
(16 votes, average 4.13 out of 5)

Though Shawn Johnson was added to the U.S. national team, the 2008 Olympic balance beam champion is still protecting the knee she injured during a ski trip in January 2010. Johnson recently had minor surgery to clean out her left knee, but the 19-year-old Iowan is still cautious about pushing too hard, according to her coach, Chow Liang.

"Shawn still has her challenges ahead of her," Chow told IG. "And I think one of the bigger challenges is ... her knee. At this point, we don't have a clear picture of how much she handle yet."

Though Johnson has posted videos of her progress, including a double layout on a regular floor exercise mat, Chow says he is hesitant to push her further right now.

"There's more than double layouts," Chow said. "She can tumble straight. But the tour jete, turning, the little things, are still bugging her."

Chow says Johnson also is learning how to cope with a serious injury for the first time.

"She never had any injuries in gymnastics, which is putting her in a tougher situation right now," Chow said.

Johnson's goal was to make the team to the 2011 Tokyo World Championships, followed by the 2012 Olympics, but Chow says that Johnson herself can't tell how much stress her knee can handle. But he wasn't against the idea of Johnson assuming a limited role at worlds in October.

"My strategy was that if we can fight for a spot on one or two events to help Team USA this year in Japan, that would be ideal [for Shawn], to get her in the competition spirit," he said. "That [would] give her much more confidence, much more trust from the (U.S.) federation, from (National Team Coordinator) Marta (Karolyi), and the Olympic Committee, to [help] secure her spot for the Olympics."
