Although the Dutch men's sole 2008 Olympic berth has been claimed by a teammate, 20-year-old Jeffrey Wammes said he aims to continue his Olympic quest - for the 2012 Games in London.

At the 40th World Championships, held Sept. 1-9 in Stuttgart, the Dutch men's team finished 20th, missing an automatic berth for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Epke Zonderland, the team's top all-arounder, qualified to Beijing as an individual.

In the qualifications round, Zonderland was 29th all-around and Wammes, a previous world finalist on floor exercise and vault, was 34th.

In the event finals, Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder won the silver medal on rings; and Zonderland and Wammes finished fourth and fifth on high bar, respectively.

At the 2006 French International in Lyon, Wammes broke both ankles landing a double layout on floor exercise. Though doctors at first doubted he would be able to return to competition, he make a complete recovery and earned the bronze medal on vault and a ninth-place all-around finish at the 2007 European Championships in Amsterdam.

Wammes said resting his ankles following his injury improved his all-around performance.

"It did help pommel horse a little bit, and rings, too, but especially high bar," Wammes said. "I've been doing a lot of high bar, and I think that was a good way to use the time. Of course, I lost a half-year of training, and in gymnastics, that's really hard."

Although Wammes tumbled and vaulted confidently in Stuttgart, he said he is still cautious about landing too solidly.

"My ankles are OK," he told IG in Stuttgart. "They don't bother me at all on floor or vault. I tape them, but it's just for security - not for pain or other reasons. That's the only issue, especially on floor. If I have to land forward, it's hard for me to stick it. Sometimes I take a step that's not necessary, but I'm afraid to land (too hard)."

Wammes said he is ready for the upcoming challenges that his Dutch teammates will provide leading up to 2012.

"I have to train hard and do the best I can," he said. "And do as much as possible."
