Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva led Russia as the 2010 Rhythmic World Gymnastics Championships began Monday in Moscow.

Reigning world and Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva led Russia to an early lead as the 2010 Rhythmic World Championships began Monday in Moscow.

The Russian gymnasts performed with the rope to take a commanding lead over Azerbaijan, which performed with the hoop, 84.675-79.125. Ukraine is third with 78.825.

Kanayeva, who swept the 2009 World Championships in Mie, Japan, scored a high 28.550 with the rope, which included a 9.800 artistic score. Teammates Daria Kondakova (28.350) and Yana Lukonina (27.775) followed in the rankings.

Russian-born Aliya Garaveya led Azerbaijan with a top-scoring 27.275 on hoop. She was followed in the rankings by Kazakhstan's Anna Alyabyeva (26.900) and Israel's Neta Rivkin (26.475).

Russian head coach Irina Viner predicted Kanayeva would be unstoppable again in 2010, taking a spiritual approach to victory.

"Zhenya has no serious sins," she said. "I think nothing should interfere [with her winning]."

The world championships began at Moscow's Olympic Sports Complex with a dramatic opening ceremony. Participants included 2004 Olympic silver medalist Irina Chaschina, who performed a circus-style aerial act.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
