Mattie Larson won the all-around gold Saturday at the CoverGirl U.S. Classic in Chicago, where 2008 Olympian Alicia Sacramone made a successful comeback with individual titles on vault and balance beam. The competition was the final qualifying event for the upcoming U.S. national championships, to be held in August in Hartford, Conn. Larson began the competition with a fall on beam, sitting down her 2 1/2 twist dismount after a solid set. The 18-year-old Los Angeles native rebounded on the other three events, showing polished gymnastics on floor exercise (double layout, triple twist); vault (double twisting Yurchenko) and uneven bars (Endo-pirouette to Stalder-Shaposhnikova, Ricna, giant-full to Tkatchev and double layout). "It felt good to win here," Larson said. "It gives me more confidence going into the Visa Championships, but it won't change my training or anything. From here, I need to go back and work on being consistent between salutes from my opening salute to my finishing." First-year senior Amanda Jetter finished second, taking her highest score on vault (14.550) for a clean Yurchenko double twist. She and teammate Cassie Whitcomb had led the competition after three events, but both missed their beam routines in the fourth rotation. Mackenzie Caquatto, coached by Chinese Olympians Li Yuejiu and Wu Jiani, placed third all-around and second on both vault and uneven bars (three releases). 2008 Olympian Alicia Sacramone, 22, marked a successful comeback, winning both events she entered. The seven-time world medalist looked fit and healthier than she had in Beijing, where she was suffering from an injured Achilles' tendon. In Chicago she threw a beautiful layout handspring Rudi on vault for the highest score of the night (15.800). "Now that it's over, I feel great," Sacramone said. "I took care of my nerves early with beam, and then vault just came easily. It felt great to get that first one out of the way, so now I can go back and prepare for the Visa Championships and try for my spot on the national team." World champion Bridget Sloan and world runner-up Rebecca Bross both competed uneven bars and balance beam. Bross won bars (15.450) but sat down her Arabian double front beam dismount. Sloan was fourth on bars and second on beam. Jordyn Wieber (59.950) won the junior competition Saturday afternoon over Katelyn Ohashi (59.100) and Kyla Ross (58.700). Wieber's Yurchenko 2 1/2 earned 15.900, the highest score in Chicago. "Landing the 2 1/2 was great," Wieber said. "It's such an adrenaline rush and executing it is a real confidence booster for me heading into nationals." Download full scores for seniors and juniors. ... Anyone notice the top 4 juniors scored better than ALL of the seniors?? I guess that's good for the future, but what about the NOW? |
