China took four men's golds and South America swept the women's titles at the 1st Portugal World Cup, which concluded Sunday in São João da Madeira.
Chinese national champion Feng Zhe won two titles in Portugal.
The Chinese men powered through Portugal, with golds for Guo Weiyang (pommel horse), Chen Yibing (still rings) and Feng Zhe (parallel bars and high bar).
Romania's Flavius Koczi picked up the other two titles, leaving Brazilian star Diego Hypolito a frustrated second on both floor exercise and vault.
Hypolito's older sister, three-time Olympian Daniele Hypolito, had better luck, winning the same events in the women's category as part of a South American sweep. She dedicated her victories to her brother, who celebrated his 24th birthday Saturday.
"I'll guard those two medals with the greatest care in the world," Daniele said. "They were won with a lot of dedication and training in Brazil. I spent 2009 recovering from a series of injuries, but today I again felt that taste of victory and the medal on my chest. I dedicate these medals to my brother Diego who gave me the strength to keep following my work."
Venezuelan Olympian Jessica Lopez tied Hypolito for the women's floor exercise title and also won uneven bars. The former University of Denver standout won bronzes on the other two events, making her the most successful gymnast in São João da Madeira with four medals total.
Colombian Olympian Nathalia Sanchez won the balance beam title and the silver medal on uneven bars.
Vietnam's Phan Thi Ha Thanh, second on both vault and balance beam, made history for the small Asian nation with its first women's World Cup medals.
Chinese women's national champion Sui Lu and teammate Zhang Yujiao had been on the roster but did not compete in Portugal.
The host nation earned seven spots in finals but was shut out of the medals. The best showings came from Zoi Lima (fourth place on women's vault) and Manuel Campos (sixth on parallel bars). The Portuguese national championships will be held July 3-4 in Torres Novas.
The FIG World Cup circuit will return in September with events in Ghent (Sept. 11-12), Kiev (Sept. 18-19) and Ostrava (Sept. 22-Oct. 2).
