Newcomer Yang Yilin, 15, won the all-around at the Chinese National Championships, held Thursday in Shanghai.

Yang performed cleanly to defeat top qualifier Xiao Sha, who fell on uneven bars, and 2006 world team member He Ning, who fell on floor exercise.

Other members of China's world champion women's team also faltered. Pang Panpan fell on both balance beam and vault, and Zhou Zhuoru fell from the uneven bars.

Pang tied 2004 Olympians Zhang Nan and Fan Ye for 13th place.

Unlike the men's judging in Shanghai, the judging for the women has been especially strict. The top score from the three all-around medalists was a 15.600 from Xiao on beam.

Women's head coach Lu Shanzen said he was pleased with the performance of the young gymnasts in Shanghai.

"Xiao Sha of Guizhou, Yang Yilin and Li Shanshan from Guangdong, Hubei's Deng Linlin and Shanghai's Sui Lu, they've all given us something to think about during the Olympic qualification process," Lu said.
