Xiao, Feng Lead Chinese Nationals

Xiao Sha and Feng Jing were the top all-around qualifiers at the Chinese National Championships, taking place in Shanghai.

Chen Yibing

At this nationals they are applying a special type of scoring, mainly on the women's side, that is intentionally more strict than international scoring. Adding a a full point to scores on each event (except for vault) would give a more accurate sense of how the routines would score internationally.

The scores on the men's side are more on par with international judging. World rings champion Chen Yibing scored a 17.00 on rings.

Xiao, a first-year senior, topped newcomer Sui Lu in the qualifying. Xiao was the top qualifier on balance beam (15.35) and also qualified to the finals on uneven bars and floor exercise.

Third was another newcomer, Yang Yilin, who is already singled-out by the Chinese coaches as one to watch for. She is superb on uneven bars and balance beam and also in the all-around. She has beautiful lines and a style on uneven bars that reminiscent of Liu Juan (who had the same coaches). This is Yang first year on the national team (she was recruited specifically for her UB potential) and already considered a key candidate for Beijing. She was second all-around and second on uneven bars at the Foshan Nationals earlier this year, and also did quite well at the China-Australia dual meet in May.

2004 Olympian Li Ya only competed on uneven bars, as she's still resting from a knee injury sustained a few weeks ago. Another all-around standout and major contender for the world and Olympic teams, Jiang Yuyuan, only competed two events here as she's also recovering from injury.

Feng Jing, who won the 2001 world all-around title at 16, edged Chen by one tenth. World all-around champion Yang Wei qualified third, less than half a point behind Chen.

World and Olympic champion Li Xiaopeng sat out the competition, still resting his foot injury.

The men's and women's all-around finals will be held on June 13 and June 14, respectively. The schedule for this year's nationals is modeled after the 2008 Olympic schedule, with team finals and all-around finals starting at 11:00 in the morning, rather than in the evening as has been the norm for past Olympics. Per the '08 Olympic model, the event finals will be spread out over the course of three days.
