IG Online’s holiday series continues with a feature on World Cup medalist Saša Golob (Slovenia), whose goals for 2010 include new skills, more international success and an athletic scholarship to a U.S. university.

Sasa Golob (Slovenia)

The 18-year-old Golob, who trains at Siska Gymnastics Club in Ljubljana, told IG this week she is eagerly awaiting the results of the Standardized Aptitude Test she took two weeks ago. A high score on the SAT, which is used for college admissions in the U.S., could help her accomplish her goal of studying and training at an American university.

"I really want to study medicine, and in Slovenia it is hard to coordinate studying with training," said Golob, whose first name is pronounced Sasha. "That would mean I would eventually have to choose between gymnastics and medical school. But gymnastics isn't just a sport for me. It is a way of life, and that's why I can't imagine stopping it. For this reason I decided to go study in the U.S., where they have very good conditions for training and studying at the same time. And of course, studying abroad, practicing a foreign language and meeting new people can be a great experience."

Golob said she expects her SAT results during the Christmas holidays.

"Then will see what the next step will be," she said. "I haven't fully decided yet about which university I'm going to attend, but I got some positive response from a university in Maryland."

Golob, who competed at the 2007 and 2009 world championships, has performed well on the World Cup circuit in the past two years. She placed third on balance beam and fifth on floor exercise at the 2008 World Cup of Szombathely, Hungary; fifth on floor exercise at the 2008 World Cup of Ostrava, Czech Republic; sixth on floor exercise at the 2009 World Cup of Maribor, Slovenia; and seventh on floor exercise at the 2009 World Cup of Osijek, Croatia.

To assist in the recruiting process, Golob and coach Mitja Samardzija created a presentation video that university coaches can view on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6bVCq6_k6o). The video includes Golob’s routines on all four events, with performances from the 2009 Mediterranean Games and other competitions.

"The video was my idea, but I couldn't have done it without my coach," said Golob, who placed 29th all-around at the 2009 European Championships in Milan. "He was the one who helped me put the video together. We decided to do this because that's the best way to introduce my gymnastics skills and also me as a person."

Golob said 2009 was a year of memorable moments, good and otherwise.

"If I look back, I definitely have to recall the Mediterranean Games, where I was ninth all-around, eighth on bars and fifth on beam," she said. "The high points of last season were also making some World Cup finals. Unfortunately, the low point was the world championship in London (October), which really didn't end as we had expected."

Golob said she is looking forward to sharing Christmas and New Year’s Eve with family and friends.

"I'll celebrate Christmas in the circle of my family," she said. "We'll have a traditional Christmas dinner with roast meat and potatoes. Then, on Christmas morning, we open presents. Our family tradition is that every member buys a present for all the other family members. I have no plans for New Year’s Eve yet. I just know that I'll spend it with my friends somewhere in Ljubljana."

Golob said she has specific goals for the new year, in and out of the gym.

"I don't have any special new year’s resolutions, but I have two wishes for 2010," she told IG. "They are to manage to get to the university I choose, and to finish the season without any injuries."
