![]() European champion Fabian Hambüchen has withdrawn from this week's world gymnastics championships in London after suffering an ankle injury Sunday. Hambüchen, the reigning world champion on high bar, rolled his left ankle on floor exercise during podium training. An MRI revealed a ruptured ligament. He is not expected to need surgery, but the healing time is expected to be four weeks. "It really snapped, and I knew that something was broken," he said. "My first words were to the head coach were, 'That's it, it's over.'" The popular Hambüchen said that he plans a quick return, and that his injury will not affect the German team in the individual worlds. "I'll be back," he said. "I'll be just 22 years old in two weeks. Now it's all about 2012." Hambüchen had been expected to challenge for medals in the all-around, floor exercise and high bar in London. He won the all-around bronze at the 2006 Worlds and all-around silver in 2007. The 2009 World Gymnastics Championships begin Tuesday in London with the men's qualification competition. ... He'd probably grab a couple of medals, so that's a pity for him and lucky for the rest of the competitors. Wish him quick comeback. |
