Mikulak Leads After Day One At U.S. Championships

After day one at the 2019 U.S. Championships in Kansas City, MO Sam Mikulak of the U.S.O.T.C leads the men’s competition with a score of 86.75. Mikulak who is going for his sixth national title hit six-for-six posting top scores on floor 14.65/5.9 (double front piked, 2 ½ to double front), p-bars (front 1 1/4 to hang to Moy, Bhavsar, stuck double front half) 15.35/6.4 and high bar (Cassina, Kolman, layout Tkatchev, Tkatchev half) 14.2/6.0. The defending champion has a 2.75 lead ahead of Yul Moldauer from the University of Oklahoma who posted 84.0 and is currently in second place. Moldauer also hit all six events.

Standing in third place are Shane Wiskus (University of Minnesota) and Akash Modi (Stanford University) scoring 83.95. Wiskus posted the top vault score of the day for his clean Kas 1 ½ 14.5. Trevor Howard from Ohio State was fifth with a 82.25. Sixth in the rankings is Riley Loos (Technique) with a 81.15. Donnell Whittenburg from the U.S.O.T.C. was having a great competition until the last event, high bar, where he hit with loose form for 11.85/5.2, which put him in seventh place. Matthew Wenske (University of Oklahoma) was also having a great day until his last event, vault, where he was short on his Kasamatsu double twist and put his knees and hands down (he may have sustained an ankle injury on the landing and is doubtful for the second day of the competition). In the junior competition at the 15 & 16 age group Nicolas Kuebler (Metropolitan Gymnastics) leads the competition with a 79.6, followed by Taylor Burkhart (5280) 79.45 and Khoi Young (Sportsplex) 79.0. In the 17 & 18 years old age group the leader is Colt Walker (AcroTex) 80.1. Standing in second is Garrett Braunton (Cypress) 78.3, followed by Crew Bold (University of Minnesota) 78.1.

The competition continues tomorrow with day one of the junior women at 1pm CT, and senior women at 6:30pm CT.
