|Brazilian star Jade Barbosa has lost her chance to compete at the 2012 Olympics for refusing to sign a contract regarding endorsements and team uniforms.
World bronze medalist Jade Barbosa's refusal to sign a team contract has cost her a chance to compete at this summer's Olympic Games in London, Brazilian media reported Wednesday.
Barbosa reportedly declined to sign a contract related to team apparel, taking her out of contention for a spot on the squad. Barbosa has an endorsement contract with BMG while the national team is sponsored by Caixa Econômica Federal.
"We understand that negotiations are closed," said Georgette Vidor, selection coordinator for the Brazilian women's gymnastics squad. "She has the right not to sign a contract or want to wear the uniforms, but she cannot be part of the team without it."
Barbosa is the only Brazilian gymnast to win a world all-around medal, finishing third all-around in 2007. She struggled with a wrist injury at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but came back to win the bronze on vault at the 2010 Worlds in Rotterdam.
Barbosa had been one of nine gymnasts invited to an Olympic training camp in Rio de Janeiro, along with Letícia da Cosa, Harumi de Freitas, Daiane dos Santos, Ethiene Franco, Adrian Gomes, Daniele Hypolito, Bruna Leal and Gabriela Soares. She will reportedly be replaced by Beijing teammate Lais Souza.
