After missing out on the finals at last month's world championships, Chen Yibing (China) and Diego Hypolito (Brazil) claimed victories at the Osijek World Cup, held Saturday in Croatia.

Hypolito, the 2005 and 2007 world champion, won his fifth World Cup title of the year.

In preliminaries at the 2009 World Championships, held Oct. 13-18 in London, Hypolito placed ninth, missing out on the eight-gymnast final. In Osijek, he was back in familiar first-place territory.

"I thought it deserved a higher score, I was better than yesterday (Friday), but I think it was tough with all the athletes," Hypolito told Brazilian TV. "The important thing was I won, which was my goal. It was a year of many victories."

Croatia's Tomislav Markovic placed second to Hypolito, 15.550-15.225.

"Only at the end I was a little shaky, but everything else was great," Markovic said. "The crowd was my teammate and their support meant a lot to me."

2009 world bronze medalist Alexander Shatilov (Israel) again placed third.

"After my performance at the world championships in London, I was extremely tired," said Shatilov, Israel's first world medalist. "So I think third place is a success."

World champion Zhang Hongtao won pommel horse with the day's highest score (16.075) and biggest margin of victory (.725).

Chen, the 2008 Olympic champion, claimed another victory for the Chinese. In London, Chen had been favored to defend his title on still rings, but missed the final after falling on his dismount in qualification. In Osijek he edged Russia's Konstantin Pluzhnikov, 15.775-15.650. World and Olympic bronze medalist Alexander Vorobyov (Ukraine) again placed third.

In the women's competition, Czech Olympian Jana Komrskova won vault over Croatia's Tijana Tkalcec and Dutch gymnast Mayra Kroonen.

Kroonen won the uneven bars title over Jana Sikulova (Czech Republic) and Valeria Maksyuta (Israel).

Competition concludes Sunday in Osijek, the second to final stop on the 2009 World Cup circuit. The season concludes next weekend at the DTB Cup in Stuttgart.
