Default 10 Things I Miss About Gymnastics

I know that everyone in the forum does not get IG but Dwight Normile wrote an article about the 10 things he misses about gymnastics and asked the readers to make a list. What a great place to get a bunch of die hard gymnastics fans ideas.

Here are mine (4 general, 3 about men's gymnastics, 3 about women):

1) Compulsories
2) The perfect 10
3) Team competition where everyone on the team has to contribute and it was more then 3 kids from each country have to win a team title.
4) Artistry!!!
5) I miss when the guys didn't look like they were going to die 5 skills into their routine.
6) When AA guys didn't have a VERY weak event.
7) The little transitions on floor when you could tell the stylish from the rest.
8) Dance in between the skills on beam and floor.
9) A leap that does not have a switch leg or ring shape in it.
10) Mounts that look good on beam.

i don't know if i have ten but..here's a few things.

1.COMPULSORIES! oh how i miss this.
2.6-5-4! or even 7-6-5,but that will never be again.
3.the ten
4.three gymnasts in the AA from each country
5.Russia and Romania being powerhouses.
6.this is new but letting the women step out of their tumbling runs. hello! no one is going to stick every pass(except for maybe Carly Patterson) and that image is what a lot of ppl(general fans) know as gymnastics.

i have more and i will write them later.

This is great!!! Here are mine:

1. The old team competition format
2. artistry a la Pavlova
3. good form
4. originality
5. planches
6. to have a bunch of true AA gymnasts
7. also top 36 AA competition
8. and also 3 per country rule in the AA
9. having a real team final competition with 12 teams like at the 1995 Worlds in Sabae
10. to have only full Worlds and not the back and forth with either AA or EF

Yes sweetie, it will come back. Not only will it come back, it will be darker and stronger than ever.
As long as the wind resistance doesn't harm your gymnastics, you can keep your fuzzy legs.

Love, Kitty

1. Choreography/Artistry
2. The 10
3. Interesting elements on beam. It used to be my favourite event, now not so much.
4. Originality
5. Non- Yurchenko vaults
6. Russian dominance, nobody did it better.
7. Real depth in WAG AA (e.g. 1992 AA finals)
8. Combination/interesting tumbling
9. When a fall guaranteed that you were off the podium.
10. Canada having a decent (albeit underscored) WAG team.

Seems like we are all echoing similar sentiments, too bad nobody listens to the fans.

I like number 7. I just rewatched this meet (the men's one was just put up on youtube, thank you aunt joyce for letting me know) but this was really a deep comp we don't have that anymore. It seems like the top four girls are the ones without a fall and everyone else made mistakes.

This meet is probably my fav ever in terms of talent. I think that WAG was truly at its pinnacle in 92. So many great gymnasts that had a legitimate shot at the AA crown - Gutsu, Bogi, Lysenko, Miller, Zmeskal, Bontas, Milo, Gogean, Onodi.

Also the sheer beauty of Mitova and Portocarrero... sigh

1.Compulsaries! Bring back the artistry!
2.6-5-4 or 7-6-5, come on nobody's perfect give a little Bruno!!
3.Perfection! (ie...10!!)
4.Three gymnast per rule in the AA. Hey if a team is that deep that it can sweep the medals then let them!!
5. Eastern European tradition...not just Russia and Romania but Ukraine and even Belarus.
6.Originality!
7. Difficult and interesting beam mounts...really just hoping on the beam is pathetic!
8. Vaults other than a Yurchenko...do gymnasts even realize there are other vaults!!
9. Artistry over power! It is "artistic gymnastics" not "power tumbling"
10. To go with #9...the step back on the floor, while sticking it is nice I miss the artistry of a lunge back, I think judges can tell if a gymnast has control
