IG Live Update: 8:55 PM: The gymnasts are being introduced again to the crowd. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin have secured berths to the 2008 U.S. Olympic team.

The training squad is Bieger, Davis, Hong, Johnson, Larson, Liukin, Lothrop, Memmel, Peszek, Sacramone, Sloan and Worley.

Projected Olympic team

The U.S. doesn't have the depth it had in 2004, but will be able to put up three very strong routines on each event. The only question mark is uneven bars, which is where the Chinese could take a big advantage with two potential scores of 17.000.

Shawn Johnson: Solid as a rock here, throwing the hardest routines on three of the four events. I don't think floods — or even tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes or asteroids — could distract Shawn. She looks very unphased by everything. Her parents and coaches have done a tremendous job with her.

Nastia Liukin: Had a few misses here, but she and her dad know the time and place to nail everything when it counts is in August in Beijing, not June in Philadelphia. They've got to head back to Texas and perfect uneven bars, because a truly flawless routine there could lead to three golds for Nastia: team, all-around and uneven bars. Nastia is not just an artistic gymnast, she is a performer. But most significantly, she is a fierce competitor in the style of Svetlana Khorkina, doing routines and making skills the unbelievers say can't be done with her age and physique. She is the sport's leading lady today.

Alicia Sacramone: Even Marta Karolyi, who has tried to be as vague as possible about the potential team, admits Sacramone is a lock for this team. Alicia is unquestionably the best vaulter on the U.S. team, and also can contribute on balance beam and floor exercise in team finals. With her refreshing personality and poise, she is one of the best representatives for women's gymnastics today. Most importantly, she is a great leader and deserves to be team captain again. But with a sore calf and aching Achilles, this 19-year-old needs to avoid overtraining in the next six weeks to be fresh for Beijing. Marta and Mihai, let Alicia rest a little and enjoy her star status this summer.

Samantha Peszek: Proved her consistency all year with strong performances at the American Cup, U.S. Championships and U.S. Trials. The U.S. will need her double-twisting Yurchenko vault and possibly floor in team finals, and she can compete on any event in prelims. Sam has lots of tricks and clean form across the board and that plus consistency have moved her into Marta's winners column.

Chellsie Memmel: Clocked a ticket to Beijing with her strong performance on bars, an event where the U.S. desperately needs every tenth to not get clobbered by the Chinese. Memmel can also help on balance beam and floor exercise, where she does not hold back on the acrobatics. The only question mark for Memmel is her history of untimely injuries, but Marta can't deny a healthy Memmel.

Bridget Sloan: The U.S. Olympic team won't be announced until late July precisely because of gymnasts like Sloan, who needs more time to recover from her knee injury. The U.S. needs her on uneven bars, and extra focus here is what could secure her spot. Marta likes gymnastics like Bridget has, which is clean for the most part and done with an elegant body line.

Possible Alternates

Ivana Hong: A beautiful gymnast who performs with the elegance missing from too many gymnasts today, Ivana was thought to be too weak on uneven bars to contend. However, she boosted her stock in Philly with a 15.550 on uneven bars the second day. Her vault is underscored and her floor exercise is a treat to watch, but her balance beam is inconsistent.

Jana Bieger: Has plenty of experience and tricks, and can help on uneven bars, but she gets hammered by the B-Panel for her basic execution errors.

Mattie Larson: Another beautiful gymnast who Marta would love to show off. Her floor exercise will likely be well-received in preliminaries and the U.S. could use her there in the team finals. Even the non-gymnastics fan can see this gymnast's floor routine is more pleasing to watch than nearly every other one.

Chelsea Davis: Marta likes this gymnast, and it doesn't hurt that she is coached by former Karolyi gymnast Kim Zmeskal. She doesn't quite have the routines needed for big-time competition, but, like Larson, she is a rising star who could benefit from the Olympic experience.

The Big Question Mark

Shayla Worley: Shayla's back problems aren't going to go away overnight and herniated discs really only can be relieved by reducing training (or a last-resort surgery). She can't be counted out however, and she has the experience needed in Olympic competition. Not to mention she showed her toughness by gritting it through six routines in Philadelphia, and she gets points for just finishing her bars routine Sunday after that heavy fall. They won't risk a hurting gymnast even as an alternate, but if she's healthy, Shayla could bump Sloan off the team.

The Olympic trials will be a useful indicator, but it all comes down to what happens at the selection camp in one month. Reportedly there are three people on the selection committee, but Marta is it in reality, so who will impress her in July?

I'd actually pick Mattie Larson over all of them...what a sparkplug! She lit up the arena and the crowd loved her! By the way, Chellsie DESERVED that standing ovation...what guts! What determination! SHE is the rock of this team...Happy Birthday Chellsie! Make us proud in Beijing!

I think Jana Bieger deserves to be the 6th member of the team. Despite her form problems, her bar scores were higher than Sloan's or Worley's, and I have confidence in her ability to hit when it counts. By contrast, Bridget's nerves & Shayla's back are clearly giving them problems.

Here's my picks:

V: Johnson, Sacramone, Peszek
UB: Liukin, Memmel, Johnson or 6th member
BB: Johnson, Liukin, Memmel
FX: Johnson, Sacramone, Memmel/Liukin/Peszek

Funny thing is - the US women's team doesn't really NEED a 6th member, since we don't really have anyone besides Liukin & Memmel that can score much higher than Johnson on bars (maybe a couple of tenths, but no more). The role of a sixth member may just be to keep Johnson fresh, since she can hardly be expected to hit 12 for 12 (plus event finals).

I feel Shawn Johnson was underscored on beam both days. anyone feel the same?

on the second day, i only saw a minor wobble and the step on the landing and she got like a 9.3 B score!

Here is my call:

UB - Liukin, Memmel, Sloan

I'd sub Bieger for Sloan in your list, but I'm hoping Sloan gets her DTY back and beats out Peszek.
armchr quarterbk on Tuesday, June 24, 2008
I agree that Shawn was a little underscored on beam (although one of her leaps is definitely under 180 degrees). Her form is certainly better than Chellsie’s, who scored a 9.4 on execution the second day (which I thought was pretty generous). Have you ever seen a picture of Chellsie in the middle of a back-layout-stepout? Knees are bent and feet are completely flexed! While both Johnson & Memmel are certainly capable of impressive skills, I like to see beauty & grace on beam, and you just don’t see that with either of these power gymnasts. I’d like to see the judges deducting more for poor form / poor extension on EVERY skill. It’s not just about throwing the tricks & sticking the landings, it’s about technique.

chellsie is def overscored on beam in the U.S.

i thought johnson deserved a 9.3 (it might have been even a little too high) because she has flexibility issues with hips turned out as well. and she always lands with a very low chest on several skills
xeroxxxed on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Chellsie is awesome but she has really does have poor form. not only bent knees but her legs cross when she twists.. reminds me of Kristen Maloney and Elise Ray. i wish her the best though and that standing ovation at the end of her FX on day 2 was well deserved!!
maybe she can work on her form, i dont know why but i'd rather see her go to the AA than Nastia.
tripleback on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I admire her for coming back from all those injuries, but Chellsie's gymnastics is just UGLY to watch!!! Her form and feet and wrists are gross. Why would you teach someone to hold their hands like that? I feel bad for her because she has not had the best coaching.
armchr quarterbk on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I don't think Chellsie or her coaches are particularly interested in working on her form - they know she can pick up big scores regardless. It's funny, because when the new code came into use, I thought the mantra was "don't do a skill unless you can do it perfectly," but that turns out not to be true (eg: even if Shawn Johnson were to FALL on her 2 1/2 Yurchenko, she'd still score as well as she would on a stuck double). I have mixed feelings about this, since I love to see the envelope being pushed in terms of difficulty, but I really hate to see sloppy execution being essentially overlooked.

Regarding Nastia vs. Chellsie, I'm rooting 100% for Nastia. In large part because of her vastly better overall technical execution, but also because I think she got royally screwed over in 2005 by that artificial score truncation in the AA. And looking back over the performances, I thought she deserved to be the world champion outright. But I definitely admire Chellsie for coming back from 2 major injuries, and I have no doubt that she will be a huge help to the US team in Beijing.
xeroxxxed on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Very true about Nastia. i like her she's a beautiful gymnast and now that she has improved FX she might have a greater chance.
I just hope everyone hits.

i would like to see Chellsie win something on her own. she deserves it. maybe she can medal on Bars or Beam.
Lschoepps on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I pray Chellsie does not win any individual medals or even make any finals... Ugly gymnastics should not be rewarded with Olympic medals.
schood85 on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I think Chellsie is great and has good form except for maybe some crossed legs on the twists. But Nastia has that too! And about her layout on beam, her knees are straight and most of these girls flex their feet a little. Everyone has minor form problems, its not that big of a deal. What's most important is that we win team gold so it's great that Chellsie is back and we have another strong scorer! I also think Sloan will get the 6th spot if she improves at camp.
xeroxxxed on Thursday, June 26, 2008
I'm hoping that Shayla Worley gets the 6th stop, thats if she is healthy. she was a big part of the US in 07 Worlds. She can be great on UB and she obviously has experience.

Johnson
Liukin
Memmell
Sacramone
Pezchek
Bieger

alt.
Larson or Sloan
Worley
Hong
N/a: Lothrop/Davis- but they deserve to be at the selection camp-if Larson doesn't make alternate, she will be huge in the near future....
USGoingforGold on Sunday, July 06, 2008
I think Chellsie's a great gymnast and she deserves to be on the Olympic team. Honestly, I would not have been totally, 100% shocked if they had named her as one of the two on Night Four.

Five of the six spots are locked. I think Bridget Sloan or Jana Bieger (most likely Sloan) is going to get the last spot. Whichever woman is not picked for that last spot will be an alternate. Then I think Shayla might be an alternate, as well as Ivana Hong.
