Two-time defending champion Dasha Joura took the all-around lead Thursday at the Australian Championships in Melbourne.

Joura led the next highest finisher, Shona Morgan, by more than a full point. Joura earned her highest score on floor exercise, with a personal best 15.750 (6.3 A Panel).

Ashleigh Brennan finished third ahead of 15-year-old Emma Dennis. Lauren Mitchell, a balance beam finalist at the 2007 World Championships, placed fifth after a 12.850 on uneven bars.

The competition also serves as an Olympic trials for the women's team to Beijing. Head coach Peggy Liddick will pick eight to 12 gymnasts as the training squad for Beijing.

"What I'm looking for is the consistency, their ability to perform when the green light is on and the judges are watching, and when the pressure is on," Liddick said. "The first four spots are pretty much secure, but it's the last two spots and there's about eight girls fighting for that. Those are the kinds of things that are going to make the difference."

Liddick said Australia is aiming for the bronze medal in Beijing, although the team has been weakened by the retirements of several potential Olympians, including world team members Hollie Dykes and Chloe Sims.

The women's all-around competition concludes Friday.

Where has Hollie Dykes been? She was so great at the 206 Pac Alliance but then just disappeared except for the occasional worlds apperance...
